Marinus Felix Hrauthwulfson is a bastard. The son of a married Roman noblewoman and a Viking raider. Drusa Felix and Nero Otho Felix raised the child as their own. Drusa, his mother, was a manipulative scheming woman who resented her husband for bringing her to the edges of the Roman Empire. Her resentment drove her to commit to many affairs in attempts to gain more attention. Nero accepted the child as his own knowing full well the childs heritage. A shock of white hair over his right brow defined his father. Nero even though a warrior had a soft heart for the boy. Showing him love and teaching him stories of great roman and greek heroes, Nero groomed the boy until he met his end while defending the Antonine Wall. Free from the binds of her husband Drusa fled back to Palatine Hill, her childhood home. She left behind everything she could not carry including Marinus.

Marinus knew of his heritage and met his real father early in life. Hrauthwulf would return frequently and many times offered to bring the boy back to Norway but the boy chose to stay. Hrauthwulf showed understanding and honored the boys wishes. He taught his son of their ancestry and regaled tales of heroes and gods. They spent much time together bonding.

Already the size of a grown man at age 13, Marinus signed on with Lord Lord Pellandres and began studying warfare. Intrigued by the knights of the land, he aspired to become a knight himself, but his mixed heritage (and poverty) forbid it. He signed on as a footman with Lord Pellandres and quickly became one of the most notable soldiers in his army. Standing head and shoulders taller than the other soldiers, he was an impressive sight. He earned such a reputation among the men, they started calling him “Thrym, the Storm Giant,” inspired by his size, strength and tales from his father’s homeland.

Hrouthwolfson longs to be a knight, but Lord Pellandres cannot knight him. Hrouthwolfson’s bastard heritage does not allow it. Pellandres could ignore tradition, but he would lose great favor among his own knights and neighbors. Still, the Storm Giant is his best soldier, and more worthy of becoming a knight than any of his men.
